If you are going to be involved in Golden retriever training, you need to understand that you are going to have your hands full and that you need a lot of patience! This is not because the golden retriever is untrainable or difficult to train. The Golden retriever is in fact one of the most intelligent dog breeds around. Where the hands full and patience come in is due to the fact that Golden retrievers are just by nature so exuberant and full of life and energy by nature that is seems virtually impossible for them to sit still for a moment, let alone listen and pay attention to what you have to say. Don’t be discouraged though. Have you ever seen a Golden retriever that has been trained as a guide dog for the blind? If you have, you will get an idea of what can be achived with proper training of a Golden retriever.
Before even starting with Golden retriever puppy training, it would be a good idea to sit down and think about the rules and boundaries that you intend to set. When doing this, think about the time when your puppy will be fully grown, and what your dog will and will not be allowed to do. Will they be allowed to jump up against people (and possible knock them over), are they allowed inside, on beds, on couches etc. Once you have determined what the rules will be, apply them from day one.
One aspect that needs to be taken into account when training Golden retriever puppies is that they get bored quickly. For any training to be effective there has to be an amount of repetition. Your Golden retriever will pick up what is required quickly, repeat it a few times and then get bored, doing the opposite of what you want. The answer to this challenge is to vary the specific training, i.e. don’t do leash training for an hour, but rather do leash training for 15 minutes, followed by obedience training and then leash training again.
